De Sint-Plechelmusbasiliek in het centrum van Oldenzaal is een van de vroegste voorbeelden in Nederland van zandsteenarchitectuur. Van het uit het Duitse Bentheim afkomstige zandsteen werden in de stad vele korenspiekers, herbergen, koopmanshuizen en kloosters gebouwd. De oudste delen van het bestaande gebouw dateren uit het midden en de tweede helft van de 12e eeuw, maar de geschiedenis van de kerk gaat verder terug. Mogelijk heeft al in de 8e eeuw de rondtrekkende missionaris Plechelmus hier een eerste kerkgebouw gesticht, gewijd aan paus Silvester. Rond 1150 werd de kerk vervangen door een nieuw gebouw in romaanse stijl. Van deze kerk resteren middenschip, noordbeuk, noordertransept en een koortravee.<\/p>\n

In de 17de eeuw werd Oldenzaal een vestingstad met poorten, muren, wallen en grachten. Ondanks deze verdedigingswerken werd de stad veelvuldig belegerd, veroverd en gebrandschat door M\u00fcnsterse troepen, Geldersen, Spanjaarden, en Geuzen.<\/p>\n

Hoewel er in Oldenzaal tegenwoordig nog maar weinig middeleeuwse gebouwen te vinden zijn, is het middeleeuwse stratenplan van de binnenstad bewaard gebleven.<\/p>\n
